What is Distance Learning?

Understanding Online Degrees, Courses, and Programs

Sep 4, 2009 Michelle Schusterman

Before enrolling in a distance learning program, it is important to understand what is involved with obtaining a degree or certificate online.

As working from home is becoming more desirable, so is earning a degree or taking a course without stepping foot inside a classroom. While distance learning courses have existed for decades, the development of better technology and the internet has made studying online easier and more accessible than ever.

Online courses for bachelor's, master's, and PhD degrees are available in several fields, from nursing to business. Before signing up for any distance learning program, the potential student should know exactly what getting a degree online entails.

Distance Learning Course Costs and Structure

Many websites claim to offer online courses for a discounted price, sometimes even for free. Students need to remember that for quality instruction and a worthwhile degree or certificate that will impress potential employers, the cost of actual classes will still be (in most cases) comparable to on-site courses.

However, the overall cost is less when one takes into account transportation and possible room and board. Depending on how much material is provided online, there is also the possibility of saving on textbooks. However, the price should not be lower due to a lack of quality in instruction.

Students should also take care to note the structure of the course. There are many "hybrid" distance learning courses available, meaning that some part of the program (testing, etc.) requires the student to be present on-site. However, there are many courses that are 100% online.

Online degree programs are often seen as having a problem with cheating, considering the lack of a present teacher and the simplicity of "Googling" an answer. Students should be sure to look into examination procedures for any course before signing up.

Types of Distance Education Programs

There are two basic types of online education courses. The first, which is sometimes referred to as "synchronous", requires the student to be present online at a specific time. An example of this would be a class held via conference, such as through Skype.

The opposite, known as "asynchronous", leaves the student free to study the material and complete the work on his or her own time. An example of this would be a class held primarily through email or forums.

The Benefits to Getting an Online Degree

The obvious pros to enrolling in a distance learning program is the ability to study at home, in many cases on a self-made schedule. Obviously, access to a computer, a reliable internet connection, and a basic knowledge of things like email and online conferencing are required.

However, there are very few jobs today that don't require these basic skills. For the non-tech savvy student, enrollment in an online degree program can add even more vital skills to their resume.

The Bottom Line on Distance Learning

Distance learning programs have opened the doors for many students who otherwise would not have the opportunity to pursue a degree or certification.
