Planning, focus and organization are critical components of the online learning process. Success in online learning is dependent upon effective time management skills.

When enrolling in an online course, it is important to anticipate how the course load will be handled and incorporated into one’s day to day routine. Online learning involves a significant amount of self directed study and in order to excel in an online learning course it is imperative to incorporate various time management techniques into the day.

Create a Flexible Schedule

Start by creating a weekly work-life-school schedule outlining responsibilities and deadlines. Include leisure time, work schedule, family responsibilities and online study requirements.

Prioritize responsibilities, make a daily “to-do” list and keep track of online learning and work assignments, and deadlines. When there are tests, projects, assignments or deadlines be sure to allot additional time during the week to focus on the online course.

Be aware of daily activities that are considered time-wasters such as web-surfing or watching television. Time wasters can prevent the successful and timely completion of online learning projects, tasks and assignments.

Set Achievable Goals and Track Progress

Set specific study goals and write each goal down. Keep track of what materials need to be covered as well as the tasks that need to be accomplished during allotted study times. Make schedule adjustments as needed to accommodate study needs during the week.

Online learning courses purposefully space out deadlines, tests, assignments and projects so that participants can plan for them and incorporate them into their daily life and hectic work loads. Use the online learning calendar and keep organized notes to proactively prepare for tests, projects and assignments.

Spend quality time studying, reviewing class notes, communicating with class members and covering new course material on a regular basis.

Ask Questions and Communicate With the Instructor

If there are learning roadblocks or confusion about course material, projects or papers, make it a priority to ask questions for clarification.

Communicate with the course instructor or with other class members on a regular basis. An open line of communication with the course instructor and online peers can assist in the learning process by finding answers to questions, gaining clarification and brainstorming ideas. Asking clarifying questions will save time and allow for swift movement through the course material.

Work life balance is not always easy to juggle or maintain but by incorporating various time management strategies into the online learning process success can be achieved without compromising work or home life balance. Weekly schedules, to-do lists and consistent communication are key elements of successful time management and will make all the difference in the online learning experience.
