If you've never taken an online class before, you may be wondering if you are going to be able to handle the challenge of online learning. For people who aren't technologically advanced, it can seem especially scary to take online courses. However, it really is easy to take online classes and most people really enjoy the flexibility that online learning offers them after they become comfortable with this distance learning format. Try a few of these tips for a trouble free first online class.
Just the FAQs Maam
Your distance learning school will probably provide something known as a FAQ for new learners. A FAQ is simply a document that lists frequently asked questions and their answers. Read the FAQ thoroughly before you start your class. There should also be information on the technology you'll need to successfully access online portions of the class. Be sure you understand what is required and check to be sure you have the correct components before your course session begins. You may also want to try a dry run so that there are no technological difficulties during the first class. Sign in to chatrooms or message boards early.
Buddy Up
Distance learning can seem a lot less overwhelming when you have someone to work with. Find another person who is new to online learning and wants to take the same class. You can ask each other questions, figure out technology problems and just provide a virtual shoulder to cry on if your partner is discouraged or frustrated. If you aren't sure whether you can find someone else who's taking the class to team up with, don't worry. Almost all online classes offer some way for students to meet up virtually and you will probably discover two or three other students who would love to work as a team during one of these online activities.
Ask Questions
If you were thinking you can't ask questions because your instructor can't see you raise your hand, think again. Asking questions and making sure you understand what is expected when you are learning online is even more important than when you are taking traditional classes. Don't be afraid to email or instant message your instructor when you are confused or uncertain. He or she is there to help you learn successfully.
Finally, make sure you keep up with classwork. If you wait to do all of your coursework during the last week of a semester long class, it is virtually impossible to do well.
