Distance education programs and online learning courses require a specific skill set in order to succeed.

When signing up for an online learning course one should consider the skills and qualities necessary to succeed.

Effective time management skills, general computer and internet knowledge as well as the ability to independently think, learn and study are critical components of the online learning process and can impact a student’s online learning experience.

Learning online is a significantly different process than that of learning in a classroom environment. Successful completion of a distance education course or program involves a unique combination of skills and abilities.

Critical Thinking

Critical thinking and the ability to learn independently play a significant role in successful online learning. Students who effectively conceptualize, analyze and apply information, ask questions for clarification and engage in the course material are more likely to commit to and succeed in the online learning process.

Self Direction

Self directed learning is a critical part of the online learning process. Self motivated, disciplined and organized students will often demonstrate the ability to self manage the various requirements of an online course. This is usually done by setting specific goals, prioritizing deadlines, planning effectively and following through.

Time Management

Effective time management skills can help students keep track of course milestones and deadlines. The ability to schedule course study time as well as time to work on projects and assignments will greatly improve a student’s chances of successfully completing on online course.

Most students sign up for a distance education class because it allows them the flexibility to complete the course at their own pace. However, if students lack the ability to effectively manage their time they will quickly fall behind in the course which will negatively impact their performance and ability to complete the course.

Written Communication

Written communication is another key requirement for successful online learning. Since all course work is completed over the internet through emails, webinars and online reading it is critical that students possess solid writing skills with the ability to communicate in an effective and appropriate manner.

Computer Knowledge

Students should possess moderate computer knowledge including the ability to search and navigate the internet, send and receive emails, download information, upload documents and create and manage bookmarks.

Online learning and distance education are steadily increasing in popularity and is an excellent opportunity for individuals to earn a degree or further their education. Self-motivated, organized learners with solid written communication skills and above average computer abilities will find the transition from a traditional classroom setting to an online learning environment relatively easy.
