For those who seek less expensive alternatives to updating job skills, options abound for online education. Here are some websites offering free online classes.

People who find themselves suddenly and involuntarily unemployed may find it worthwhile to consider brushing up on job skills by taking online classes. While trade schools, universities, and other schools online also offer online classes, many other websites offer free online classes for the taking.

Some of the websites discussed in this article point the student directly to accredited schools offering free online classes, while other websites feature their own online education and distance learning classes.

If students are considering taking online classes with the aim of obtaining an online degree from accredited online schools, tuition fees will apply. But for those who simply want to feel more confident about their job skills and perhaps even change careers, taking free online classes is a good start that increases marketability.

Free Online Classes: OEDb

OEDb, or the Online Education Database, offers numerous online education options to students including online colleges, online degrees, college courses online, and online programs. The site boasts 89 online colleges and 1,033 online programs.

Navigating to free online classes from OEDb’s home page is a bit tricky, but the path is Library > Beginning Online Learning > 200 Free Online Classes to Learn Anything.

Once on the 200 Free Online Classes to Learn Anything page, students can take online classes on a wide variety of topics including health, science, math, engineering, computer science, education, arts, design, law, and business. Students can also view online college rankings and search online degrees.

Free Online Classes: Free-ed.net

Free-ed.net provides links to third-party websites offering free online classes on a range of topics including aviation, health, building and construction, science, electronics, business, economics, and marketing. IT professionals may find Computers & Information Technology online courses especially useful.

Students can also search for online courses using a keyword, or they can peruse online classes by subject or course title.

Free Online Classes: Education Portal

The top free online education website award goes to Education Portal for its extensive listings of free online classes by subject and online college. All links direct students to accredited colleges or reputable websites providing online education.

From Education Portal’s home page, click OpenCouseWare under What’s New in the top right-hand corner of the page. A listing of free online courses broken down into various subjects displays, along with numerous helpful articles on free online education.

Click on any one of the free online course links to display a page that lists websites and online colleges offering free online classes in the selected subject.

Additional Free Online Classes

Other websites offering free online classes include

  • U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA): online classes on how to start a business
  • About.com: Distance Learning topic
  • Podclass.com: video online classes (some free, others requiring a fee)

If taking online classes with the goal of obtaining a degree from an accredited online school is important, the student will have to pay tuition fees.

But for those who simply want to feel more confident about their job skills and perhaps even change careers, taking free online classes with such websites as OEDb, Free-ed.net, and Education Portal is a good start. Plus, it looks good on a resume.
