Achieving success through distance learning and self-study means overcoming unique challenges with careful planning.
Distance learning students and tutors face unique challenges which must be overcome to ensure success. Students who plan to address the following challenges will help make achievement certain. IsolationThe effects of feeling isolated are often underestimated. Support is always available, but students have to be proactive and seek it out. Look for support in the following areas:
Keeping on TrackIt can be difficult to stay on track as there’s often something more interesting or more important to do. Make sure the complete study calendar is available and diarize key dates. Many institutions ensure that there are key deadlines, such as assignment hand-in dates or tutorials, as this helps students to stay on track. If not, then commit to some. Make these dates as important as institution imposed deadlines. Include target dates for completing activities (not for starting them) and allow plenty of time to revise for any exams. Writing up assignments and final reports can be stressful so allow extra time for these. Check when holidays fall and adjust schedules accordingly. Using a LibraryThese days a lot of information is available on the internet, but it still may be necessary to visit libraries to follow up reference material – either physically or online. Make sure access is organised ahead of time. Many distance learning institutions have agreements in place with local physical libraries so students can visit. Libraries are great places to study; quiet, with few distractions and an atmosphere conducive to learning. Assignments and FeedbackAn important part of learning is feedback and review of progress. Most distance learning institutions provide a feedback mechanism, such as assignments marked by tutors or online quizzes. Receiving feedback can be difficult. It’s not just about "passing" or gaining a high score, as comments made by tutors can provide valuable help in how to move to the next level. If no feedback is given, students could ask for it. Being prepared for feedback in the right frame of mind will allow students to progress – feedback is rarely critical. Reflection and ReviewStart any distance learning course by thinking about the reasons for undertaking the course and what results are required. Write these down and keep them. Throughout the course, regularly check back to ensure progress is being made as this helps with motivation when the course gets tough. When feedback is received, review it in light of these learning objectives; to achieve the objectives, take the feedback on board. Work out what needs to change for next time. Distance learning provides an extra set of challenges for students. Being aware of the challenges and planning to overcome them will help ensure success for both students and tutors.
