Distance education and learning programs are a popular way to further one's education. However, prior to enrolling in a course it is important to do some research.

Distance education is becoming a popular option for those individuals who are interested in furthering their education. Whether it is a high school diploma, university degree or business certificate; online learning is an excellent option to a traditional classroom or school setting.

Advantages of Distance Education and Online Learning

  • A flexible online learning schedule created and managed by each student according to specific needs and time constraints.
  • The ability to continue working full time while furthering one’s education.
  • Cost savings associated with taking an online distance education class compared with a regular school or college including parking, fuel, babysitting fees and various school or student service surcharges.
  • There are hundreds of online learning and distance education programs available today. It is critical to research and evaluate various schools as well as diplomas, degrees and certificate programs being offered prior to registering for a course.

Key Points to Consider Before Enrolling in a Distance Education Course

Online learning success and enjoyment are possible when students fully examine specific factors relating to a school and its programs.

  • A college, university or any school that offers online distance education to students should be properly accredited by a state or provincial government. The validity of an online degree, diploma or certificate may be called into question by potential employers if it is not received from an accredited educational institute.

  • Some online courses have one or more prerequisite requirements. Prerequisites can include the completion of a previous online course, basic computer knowledge, experience sending and receiving emails, the ability to download files, bookmark internet pages as well as attach and send documents over the internet.

  • Online courses and distance education programs require the use of a computer set up with specific hardware and software components. Most computers will already have the required hardware and software, however, it is important for students to verify that their computer is up to date and equipped with the necessary components for the successful completion of a particular online course.

  • A course schedule will outline the course curriculum and deadlines. It is important to track deadlines and due dates for course tests, assignments, projects and papers. While there is a great deal of flexibility for students to work at their own pace there are often specific and mandatory time lines for coverage of course material and required tasks.

  • Successful completion of an online course depends upon a student’s ability to communicate and interact with the instructor and class. Distance education programs will usually provide students with the instructor’s name and email address as well as information on accessing the virtual classroom setting.

  • The course syllabus should clearly outline allotted times for group discussions, question periods and class webinars.

  • Schools should clearly display cost of an online course or program including tuition costs, student fees, book fees and any other cost required for the completion of an online course or program.

Students who proactively research a school’s programs, courses, requirements and accreditation will find that distance education through online learning is an excellent way to further one’s education.
